The brief

Launched in 2014, The Women’s Tour is an international team cycling competition that covers almost 600km (370 miles) over five stages on consecutive days. The event attracted hundreds of spectators on each of the five days, as sixteen teams fought it out for the title.

Our brief was to provide safe start and finish conditions for the racers, a task that entailed working in 10 towns across East Anglia. We developed effective, location-specific crowd-control strategies and created secure areas for vehicles, bicycles, and competitors before and after each stage.

We also had to conduct risk assessments with respect to concerns such as spectator encroachment and overzealous autograph hunters drawn to high-profile athletes, including multiple Paralympic Champion Dame Sarah Storey, World Time Trial Champion Lisa Brennauer, and double Olympic champion Laura Trott.

The result

By liaising carefully with local authorities, highways staff and the police, we were able to create safe conditions for cyclists and spectators alike, and all without undue disruption to local residents and road users. The event was a great success and was televised on Sky Sports.
